As per Item 1 of the 10-K of Verizon Communications, the core aim of the company is -- as per the name -- communications, and the related components of such a thing. The goal is worked toward largely via the two primary segments of Verizon Communications: Verizon Wireless and Verizon Wireline.
The services of Verizon Wireless:
The services of Verizon Wireline:
In layman's terms, the former specializes in cellular-based telephony, while the latter specializes in Internet and VOIP-based (landline) telephony.
In terms of the cellular telephony, Verizon does not design and create its own phones and tablets -- it merely provides the wireless network services through which these products function. To this end, Verizon purchases products from Apple, Motorola, Samsung, LG Electronics, RIM, Palm and PCD (Pantech and HTC) in order to give customers a wide selection of makes and models. Via its satellite structures, Verizon provides 3G and its proprietary 4G-LTE format to customers for the use of their cell phones. This is the core service of Verizon Wireless.
Additionally, Verizon is known for its FiOS service, a "triple-play" service (landline telephony, Internet, digital television) available in very specific markets in 16 states -- mostly east- and west-coast areas.Originally planned to continually expand, Verizon soon found the difficulty in laying expensive fiber-optics cables, as well as in securing municipal licenses, leading to an abrupt end of the expansion. Given that, Verizon decided to focus on refining its presence in the existing markets.
